Velvet Light

Astera’s Titan Tube was specially designed for the Film, Broadcasting and Cinema industries. Lightblade LB800

Introducing the Lightblade LB800™, the latest professional lighting tool from NBCUniversal® and Cineo Lighting™.  The LB800 represents the latest technological advances within the Lightblade product line, with new features and even greater flexibility.

Like all LightBlade fixtures, the LB800 uses proprietary phosphor-converted white light LEDs, as well as phosphor-converted saturated color LEDs. These work together to create a balanced, natural-looking spectrum. The saturated color LEDs use the exact same dies as the white LEDs, so all light emitting elements of the LightBlade products carry identical thermal stability and perform over time with consistent color quality.

Additional features include support of both 8-bit and 16-bit DMX data, as well as multiple color space personalities.

LiteGear

Further expanding on the popular LiteMat, LiteGear introduced their LiteMat Spectrum. It can accurately reproduce any shade of white that the camera considers correct. That can be anywhere between 2,000K and 11,000K with +/- 8 points of tint correction. LiteMat Spectrum can also augment its white light with color accents. Saturated color can be delicately added with 100 shades of depth. LiteMat Spectrum can also improve post-production workflows.

Litepanels – Vitec Group

Litepanel’s booth was flashing this year, displaying their all new Gemini 1×1 Soft RGBWW LED panel. If you are familiar with the Gemini 2 x 1 this is the skinnier version. If not the Gemini has four operating modes; CCT, HIS, Gel, and Effects.  You can operate/control the Gemini with its onboard control screen or via DMX, wireless DMX, or Bluetooth. With the Gemini 1×1, you can easily switch between AC and battery, V-Mount or Gold Mount, since the Gemini 1×1 draws just 200W.

Kino Flo

The new FreeStyle 4 LED DMX fixture and controller was the newest offering from Kino Flo at NAB this year.  It is an addition to their FreeStyle T44 fixture line.  The LED tubes used display Kino Flo’s True Match white light and RGBWW color management system. 

As the name suggests, there are 4 True Match tubes attached in the fixture housing. They are RDM capable.  The controller for the fixture has four menu options; one white, two color and FX.  With the white menu, the color temperature range is from 2700K to 6500K with dimming, Kelvin and Green/Magenta control channels.  In the first color menu, the color temp range is from 2500K to 9900K, with three additional channels; Gel, Hue Angle and Saturation.  The Gel channel includes presets such as blue and green screen and over 100 well-known lighting gels colors.  The second color menu provides individual RGB control.  The FX menu has custom presets like Candle, Fire, TV, Police, Lightning, Paparazzi, Pulse and Scroll.  The controller comes with standard DMX, wireless DMX (Lumen Radio), universal input of 100-240VAC and 24VDC.  This is a very versatile fixture and is made to Kino Flo’s exacting standards.

Litegear

Creating a buzz at the show was Litegear’s LiteBox, the perfect accessory for your new LiteTile+ Plus.  This modular system is designed so that you can mount your LiteTile to a lightweight rigid frame and then have the option of diffusing the LEDs at 1 inch (2.5 cm) or 6 inches (15 cm) away. LiteBox comes with the same three, familiar diffusers as LiteMat — so you can always integrate them together — and opaque fabric sides to eliminate spill light when used in the 6-inch deep version.  For rigging, LiteBox is surrounded by 1/4”-20 PEM® nuts and comes with an optional 5/8” baby pin adapter or grip head mounts.

Litegear also brought several pieces of gear to NAB this year that won’t be released until this summer, but brought a lot of interest to their booth.

The LiteMat Plus 8 is the largest and newest iteration of the popular LiteMat line.  It’s a 4’ x 4’ bi-color LED light source that only draws 400 watts.  It can be powered by battery or AC and is controllable via DMX.  It has front mount accessories available, like the Snapgrid, and it can be hung or velcroed to a wall, or mounted on a stand using its center ball mount.

They are also making an LED retrofit for the KinoFlo Image 80, 85, 87, and Flathead fluorescent fixtures.  Using the existing frame and yoke, the light engine installs over the existing reflector using 4 screws.  Also included is a new power supply/controller where you can choose tungsten, daylight, visual effects green or visual effects blue.  Perfect as a large soft source or chromakey light.

The LiteMat Spectrum brings camera compliant RGBW to the game to the LiteMat line.  Color balancing available from 2000k to 11,000K.  It has full spectrum color available, and color can be desaturated using the white light that you have color balanced to.  The controller allows you to select the type of camera you are shooting with to ensure compliance.  It also is controllable with onboard wireless DMX.

Electronic Theatre Controls

New control and fixture options were on hand for NAB 2018 in the ETC booth.

For fixtures, ETC’s ColorSource Pearl is the newest array for our ColorSource® line of fixtures. Available for the Linear, PAR, and Spot, Pearl is a variable, white-light option that can be tuned to output white light anywhere between 2700K and 6500K.  The Pearl array includes the same great feature set and high-quality construction as its full-color siblings including an impressively bright output, a simple user interface, and a price point that is tough to beat.

Also shown for the first time from the Irideon® line of architectural fixtures, the WLZ or, Wash Light Zoom fixture, is no exception. This feature-rich design is ideal for museums, lobbies, and retail environments.

Similar to the other fixtures in the Irideon family, the WLZ is available in a wide variety of color temperatures ranging from 3000 K to 5000 K, and several mounting variations; DataTrack, portable with c-clamp, canopy, and special request baby pin.  This fixture is ideal for low ceiling applications or in spaces with drop ceilings where a small, powerful, yet agile lighting option is needed.

The most innovative feature of the WLZ is the built-in rotating zoom adjustment at the rear of the fixture housing. This enables beam angle adjustment within an impressive range of 9-78 degrees. The zoom position markers on the fixture make fixture-to-fixture referencing quick and easy.

The Irideon WLZ now also comes with ETC’s updated fixture warranty of five years for the fixture and 10 years for the LEDs.  Shipping of the Irideon WLZ will begin in May.

Quasar Science

The new Q-LED Rainbow Linear LED Lamp featuring RGBX was on full display at LDI. This new item from Quasar can run from our 2000° Candlelight to 6000° Daylight Kelvin and can be controlled in a variety of ways, including an onboard control panel, wireless Lumen Radio CRMX or DMX I/O. They can also be daisy-chained together and run in a lead-follow mode.

The color options run from a powerful white crossfade to full an RGB mode featuring a full 360° palette for vibrant fully saturated color or mixed with X-fade white light for soft beautiful pastels. Includes color presets for Blue, Cyan, Green, Yellow, Orange, Red, Magenta, Purple.

Each lamp is self-ballasted and can run on AC power. The RGB-X Rainbow Lamps use 100-265VAC (World Power) via a True1 connector. There is also a battery option, allowing them to run on off a 10-26 VDC via locking barrel connector.

Cineo

Cineo Standard 410Cineo has added yet another powerful creative tool to the lighting professional’s arsenal – the Standard 410. This fixture won the TV Technology “Best in Show,” adding to their already award-winning white-light quality with their innovative saturated color technology.  The Standard 410 delivers up to 25,000 lumens of beautiful, easily controllable, full-gamut light. The Standard 410 boasts a substantial 2’ x 1’ diffused illuminating surface, weighing less than 29 lbs., with a maximum power of 410 watts. Creating beautiful light within an extended color gamut is only part of the story. Cineo has developed an intuitive control strategy that allows predictable, repeatable results, either using the graphical control panel or remotely with wired or built-in wireless CRMX control. The strategy is simple: four controls or four DMX channels control the entire fixture in a single mode of operation:

Dim – Cineo’s Photo-Accurate Dimming™ maps the 0-100% dimming curve to actual camera stops for precise output control using the MASTER control locally or on the first DMX channel.

CCT – For color-accurate white light, choose the CCT as you would with any Cineo fixture using the CCT rotary control or the second DMX channel.

Saturation – controls the amount of saturated color to be added to the white light, from full white to fully saturated color, managed on the third DMX channel.

Hue – To optionally add saturated color, the HUE control adjusts the hue, the color of which is displayed on the control panel, or managed on the fourth DMX channel. With the Standard 410, the same color shading can be achieved regardless of the CCT used for photography. For example, +2 Green added to 3200K CCT will look the same as +2 Green at 5600K to the correctly white-balanced camera.

Rosco Laboratories

Rosco had some new things to unveil at NAB this year.

ROSCO Silk 205First, there was the Rosco Silk 205 and 305 LED soft light provides uncompromising light output for film and broadcast professionals. Designed to meet the requirements of the most discerning filmmaker, the Silk 205 LED light fixture has been specifically developed for film and video applications that demand extremely color-accurate, high-quality light.

Utilizing proprietary, state-of-the-art, tungsten & daylight balanced LEDs, Silk 205 and 305 LED fixtures to produce a high volume of broad-spectrum white light. With TLCI, CRI and R9 metrics in the high 90’s, the fixture is capable of producing a high volume of light output at color temperatures ranging from 2800K – 6500K.

Next there was the Best Of Show Award from DigitalVideomag. the MIX from Rosco and their new acquisition DMG Lumière.

MIX features 6-LED color mixing: Red + Lime + Green + Blue + Amber + White. This enables it to generate a wider gamut of colors than RGBW or RGBA fixtures. In addition, the Red and Lime emitters in the array are manufactured exclusively for MIX – meaning that it can create colors, tones, and hues that are only available from a MIX light. Every Rosco gel color in the MIX library has been authenticated by Rosco’s color experts as a match on tungsten and daylight sources – by eye, by meter, and by camera. In addition, the MIX control software also allows you to set the base color temperature of the light before adding color.

The MIX has no menus. Simply choose between three different modes (Gel, White and Color Mode) then choose the color temperature, color or Rosco gel color you desire from there.

Rosco DMG also showed their new myMIX App. It will allow filmmakers to easily control their MIX LED fixtures from their mobile device – and so much more! Whether you’re mixing your own colors from scratch, or modifying a Rosco gel color you’ve chosen – you can mix the color you need using the myMIX App. From there, you can save those colors into your own personal library of colors in the cloud to call up whenever you need them in the future. The myMIX App allows you to capture a color and then send it to your MIX LED lights. If the color isn’t quite right – no worries. Just like any other MIX color, you can adjust the hue, intensity, and saturation of your captured color until it’s exactly what you need – then save it to your library.

Coemar

COEMAR ledko FS-6At this year’s NAB, Coemar debuted their new 6-color LEDko FS6 LED light engine and it is a winner. The new LED chip on board includes Red, Green, Blue, White (5600K), and now Lime & Phosphor Corrected Amber. Their goal was to create an all-in-one fixture that could address both Studio and Theatrical markets with the capability of producing intensely saturated colors without sacrificing the output punch of the whites. The purpose behind adding the Lime and PC Amber is to help “beef up” the Red, Green and Yellow parts of the color spectrum as well as adding the ability to produce a high CRI (above 94) throughout the range of whites. Depending on the mode you select, the new LEDko FS6 can be used as a variable white (2700K – 6500K) or an all-in-one, color changing fixture. All LEDkos can be controlled via DMX, RDM or locally at the head.

Also new to the Coemar product line are an LED Spot and Fresnel moving heads. The LEDko TM F6 uses the same 6-color LED light engine as in the LEDko FS6 in addition to all the characteristics you would expect in an intelligent profile fixture: Zoom (13-38 degrees), Internal Framing Shutters, Iris, Frost Filter, and Pan/ Tilt. For the Fresnel crowd, the LEDko TM Fresnel is available in either Tunable Tungsten (2700K – 4100K) or Tunable Daylight (4100K – 6500K), both of which include RGBW LED chips, Green/Magenta manipulation, Proportional Zoom (13-65 degrees), an Internal Barndoor Framing System, and Pan/Tilt. Hive Lighting

Hive C SeriesHive Lighting introduced two new fixtures in their C-Series line which launched last year with the Wasp 100-C.  New for 2018 are the Hornet 200-C and the Bee 50-C.  These units are variable-white/ full-color mixing utilizing a 5-color array in the Bee and the Wasp and a 7-color array in the Hornet.  Specifications indicate up to 98 CRI and 97 TLCI with a CCT range of 1,650-8,000K.  All of the units share a common form factor based around a 100mm cylinder shape.  The length varies according to model, but the standardized diameter and connection points mean that accessories bought for one model are fully compatible with the others.  These accessories include barn doors, a fresnel lens system, a 5” PAR kit, the 9.5” Super Spot Kit, and the Profile Kit which marries an ETC Source Four Mini lens tube to the light.  There are also multiple options for softboxes and kits as well as holographic spread lenses and PAR64 glass lenses for beam modification.  The 100mm size permits use of existing Profoto accessories and adapters to further expand the capabilities of the fixtures.

Units can be run from an AC>DC power supply capable of accepting 100-240V input or from 24-36V batteries.  Power consumption for the Bee 50-C, Wasp 100-C, and Hornet 200-C are 40W, 75W, and 150W.  There are onboard controls as well as wired and wireless DMX (LumenRadio) plus a Bluetooth connection for control from Hive’s free iPhone app (Android coming “soon”).  The onboard controls include several effects settings for effects such are a red<>blue sequence to mimic police car lights.

AC Lighting – Chroma Q

AC Lighting showed the new Chroma-Q Studio Force II range of fixtures.  These fixtures represent an evolution of the Chroma-Q Studio Force fixtures by incorporation the homogenized optics from the Chroma-Q Color Force II series of fixtures with a new LED package.  The fixtures utilize Chroma-Q’s proprietary ColorSure system to ensure fixtures within the same product range provide consistent output regardless of when they are manufactured.  This process involves a complex range of processes for selecting (binning) individual LED emitters; calibrating LED light engines in-house to a uniform standard and sophisticated firmware and software ensures exceptional fixture to fixture consistency.

Available in 1, 4, and 6-foot lengths the fixtures provide variable white light output from 2,800-6500K with +2/-2 green adjustment and a CRI of up to 94.  Output is 6,500; 2400; and 3600 lumens respectively.  The red, green, blue, and white emitters which make up the LED array can also be controlled individually to provide colored light for scene setting or effects.  All of the lengths have a native beam angle of 22 degrees which can be modified to 43 degrees with the optional border lens and to an 80 degree by 35-degree asymmetrical beam with the optional cyc optic.

The fixtures offer onboard control via a rear-mounted touch screen as well as remote control via DMX/ RDM and wireless control using optional LumenRadio.  When controlled via DMX, a control channel enables switching between the variable white and color modes without needing to access the fixture.  The fixtures can also be sub-divided to allow different sections of the overall fixture to be controlled separately and the design of the housing and mounting is such that fixtures can be lined up end to end with no gap for a continuous appearance.  The compact form factor (less than 7.5” x 9” square in height and depth) will make these fixtures are a good choice for spaces with low trims and their comparatively narrow beam angle will allow for a relatively longer throw than other variable white/ color mixing fixtures.
