The patent-pending MIX technology features a proprietary blend of six LEDs: Red + Lime + Green + Blue + Amber + White. This enables the MAXI MIX fixture to generate a wide gamut of colors and create accurate Rosco gel matches that have been authenticated by Rosco’s color experts.
The largest and the brightest member of the MIX range of LED fixtures, the MAXI MIX is capable of producing up to 7550 Lux (@1M @5500K) – making it the perfect choice for washing your scene in bold colors, luscious tints or flattering, full-spectrum white light. MAXI MIX fixtures can also be tiled together, enabling filmmakers and studio lighting technicians to create large walls of LED light.
On the filter side, Rosco Laboratories are seeing some increase in their sales for the Opti-Sculpt, which is a product they released last year. Opti-sculpt is a 10mil polycarbonate light-shaping material available in sheets only of 24”x 20” and 24”x 40”. It comes in 11 different degree patterns—circular and linear–and is heat-resistant and flame retardant.
With a lifespan of up to 200 times longer than standard lighting filters, the new Zircon range is designed to last. Lee Filter’s Research and Development team has developed a new way of producing filters that ensure they last longer when used with LED lights. Manufactured using a 180-micron material, they are more than double the thickness of a normal lighting filter.
There are 12 filters in the Zircon range; the five Minus Green filters remove the green casts often associated with LED lighting when using a digital camera. The four Warm Amber filters correct a range of different color temperature white LED so that they appear like Tungsten, while the three Diffusion filters offer different strengths of diffusion specifically designed for LEDs. Available in 4ft x 10ft rolls, 24in x 24in sheets and 12in x 12in Lighting Packs.
Lee Filters now has two apps available:
The new Lee Swatch app puts the complete range of Lee lighting filters on one screen and features a color picker so you can build palettes anytime. The app also features many of the tools on Lee Filter’s website, redesigned for use on a smartphone, including: Find a Dealer, Diffusion Finder, Gel Comparator, and Colour Temperature Calculator.
The Official Lee Filters Diffusion Comparator enables lighting designers to directly compare different diffusions lighting a model. The comparator is built from video clips of a real-world lighting setup using a single M8 source and each and every diffusion in the Lee range.
Available for download from the Apple App Store and Android App on Google Play.
Things were busy at the Tiffen pavilion at NAB this year. For a company that started making camera lens filters, Tiffen now has a variety of options for content creators that include optical photographic filters and lens accessories; Steadicam camera stabilizing systems; Lowel location lighting equipment; Domke camera bags and Zing camera covers; Dfx digital effects software; Davis & Sanford tripods and support systems; and Stroboframe flash brackets.
Lee Filters releases Diffusion Comparator and Stopper Exposure Guide App (Android & IOS)
Diffusion Comparator App
The Official LEE Filters Diffusion Comparator enables lighting designers to directly compare different diffusions lighting a model. As the video plays simply tap to switch the diffusion in real time. It’s a great way to select the perfect diffusion for your next project. The comparator is built from video clips of a real world lighting setup using a single M8 source and every diffusion in the LEE range. By switching between them you’ll immediately see how each molds the shadow in subtle but distinct ways. You’ll also notice any color balance changes.
- Switch diffusions in real-time as the video plays
- Pause to compare similar frames, for instance, a long shot or profile view
- A commentary track by DOP Don McVey is also available
The app includes various design refinements so you can get the most from this tool:
- This is a universal app designed for both iPhone and iPad
- On either device switch between portrait and landscape views and retract or expand the menu to get the best possible view
- Collapse the diffusion list so you can quickly jump between any filters
It’s a great tool to learn more about lighting with diffusion and for creative experimentation before getting on set.
Stopper Exposure Guide App
This is the official exposure guide for photographers using LEE Filters range of Stopper long exposure camera filters. It’s designed to help you get the most from your Big, Little and Super Stopper filters – accurately calculating the precise exposure you require and offering a flexible timer for very long shutter speeds.
Tap the menu at the top to select your Stopper:
- 6 Stops = Little Stopper
- 10 Stops = Big Stopper
- 15 Stops = Super Stopper
Turn the left-hand wheel to dial in your metered shutter speed (before you insert any filters) and read the adjusted exposure on the right-hand wheel. The app converts a full range of shutter speeds in 1/3 stop increments.
Use the built-in countdown timer for any exposure over 5 seconds and see in a glance how long you have left. For very long exposures you’ll also get a reminder notification plus all countdowns finish with an alarm and a timestamp.
There’s also a handy User Guide and links to a variety of informative and inspirational web resources to support your Stopper photography.
