Category: NAB 2015
Reports from our team members on new and interesting lighting and production equipment for content acquisition and at the National Association of Broadcasters Show held April 13-16, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Hasselbad/BRON has added a larger PARA-Light to their battery of soft, reflective light. This is especially easy to add to the new BRON 1600W HMI.
The FT System, stands for “Focusing Tube”. The PARA stands for “Parabolic Reflector”. There are 24 soft silver reflectors that make up the pop-open umbrella. Four clamps will lock it open, then the focus tube slides forward for a sharper beam, or slides inside to create a super soft effect.
The new 1600W Kit can be used with the most compact PARA 88 (34”x24”) up to the PARA 330 (130” x 95”).
The newest member of the True Steak® family of top-of-the-line MPTV filters will be unveiled. When mounted in front of the shooting lens, Schneider Optics Confetti filters create mini-streaks that appear as a sparkle or fireworks effect.Confetti’s are available in multi-color, blue, red, orange, green, yellow, pink, violet and gold in popular professional sizes.
Designed especially for Leica® Summilux® Lenses, Schneider will show its new 92mm Thread-In MPTV Clear and ND Filters, engineered to minimize the possibility of vignetting and maintain the front diameter of the lens. The Clear and IRND Filters are High Efficiency Multi-Layer Anti-Reflection Coated to minimize flair and ghosts. Schneider-Kreuznach’s Xenon FF-Prime Lens series is rapidly gaining acclaim.
Schneider was also showing their new cases for the iPro Lens kits that allow adapting high quality lensing to you mobile device.
While still offering similar products as last year, Reflecmedia has made some nice enhancements to their current product line. Offering a more polished ring light that is smaller and allows you to pick between Blue or Green LEDs, this feature allows you to quickly choose a Blue or Green background without having to change back drops. Remember the magic is in their special glass bead background material that is able to reflect minute amounts of light back to the camera, tricking it into seeing Green or Blue. Another nice feature is the fact that the ring lights are now able to be powered off of batteries, which should make it simpler to attach to cameras.
Have a small camera that doesn’t have a filter thread on the lens? Try their Microlite kit which works great with those smaller cameras!
Frezzi has come out with two new fixtures this year. First up, is their new Skylight fixture. Skylight is a weatherproof high intensity daylight LED fixture that puts out an equivalent of 650W Tungsten or 125W-150W HMI Source using only 75W of power. It can be run on AC or battery power. Depending on battery, unit can get up to two hrs on a single charge!
Equally impressive, is their new Eylight fixture which has built off the success of their other “on camera” compact fixtures. The Eylight features a compact “all in one design” that delivers the highest output with lowest power consumption. It can get over 3.5 hrs of runtime with its clever quick swap high energy rechargeable battery.
Wescott came to NAB prepared to impress the studio market with their new Flex product the first bendable, dimmable, water-resistant LED light source for broadcast & photography. Available in both 3200 & 5600 Kelvin with sizes ranging from 1’ x 1’, 2’ x 2’ and 1’ x 3’. Flex can be used flat, rolled or can be applied to the Cine Frame with a velcro attachment. Flex is offered with a ¼ stop diffusion material to further soften the light and bathe the subject in a beautiful quality of light.
Adding to their fixture line up of LED Studio Fixtures, Nila has introduced this year the Nila Arina fixture. Comparable to a 2500W HMI it uses about 800W of power at 100% and is one of the brightest LED Fixtures currently on the market. It is designed to replace their SL fixtures and will work great in lighting large venues and other applications where a lot of “punch” is needed.
Need something more portable? Try the other end of the family line up with the Nila Zaila or Varsa; comparable to a 200W/400W HMI, using only 40W/75W of power. Both of which can run on both AC & DC power!
The tried and true look of an open face “Redhead” is back with a new LED twist. Photonbeam 80 made by Photon Beard uses remote phosphor technology to offer a full spectrum, high CRI light output which adapted the 800w tungsten halogen “Redhead” to offer an 80w LED solution. The unit is supplied with daylight remote phosphors and an optional tungsten phosphor can be swapped out in a matter of seconds. The fixture ships with a mains PSU but can also be fed with a 11-17VDC, V or gold mount camera battery. Ask about the 3 head soft bag kit.can be powered from standard camera batteries, either V or Gold mount.
The 1200w HMI linear lamp in an open face format that is ideal for any requirements where raw output is required such as for use as a bounce light or for punching through some diffusion to create a very soft, powerful daylight source. Because it is only 1200w it can be powered from virtually any domestic supply worldwide and is also excellent for use with small generators for locations and mobile shooting. The Platinum Blonde by Photon Beard takes a much used, and widely available lamp, the double ended 1200w HMI, and utilized the housing of our 2kW tungsten Blonde. The head is supplied with a barndoor, head to ballast cable, 1.2kW HMI lamp and offers an optional add 575/1200w electronic ballast.

Soon to be released by Elation is a new 160w broadcast quality remote phosphor LED panel (#TVL-SL-100) with a CRI of 96.
David and Sue Corley started DSC in the basement of their home in 1962, moving into the custom 15,000 ft DSC labs building in 1989. Originally award winning film producers, DSC has evolved to become a world leader in test chart production – DSC’s flagship ChromaDuMonde, is often referred to as “the Hollywood standard” test chart.
This year at NAB in addition to their already wide array of charts they were showing the new ChromaMatch which is a combination of
electronic chart and paper chart in a split screen. When displayed on a
Sony O-LED monitor of broadcast quality (BVME250 recommended), shading
can properly balance the digital signal against the paper chart being
light by any combination of lighting fixtures technology to deliver a
perfect match. As a foot note this O-LED LCD monitor is considered by
many to be the closet to CRT quality available today.
We also heard a lot of discussion around their Xlya line of charts that are designed to test dynamic range of new 4K and greater cameras.
Dynamic range is an important factor in selecting the best camera for the job. Ensure your camera’s dynamic range is setup accurately with DSC Labs latest high dynamic range test system – the Xyla. Available with up 20 f-stops of dynamic range (only 1:1,000,000 of the light passes through on step 21), the Xyla presents more than a challenge for even the most advanced camera systems. There are currently two Xyla models available – the Xyla-15, provides a spread of 14 f-stops and the Xyla-21, an amazing 20 f-stops.
Dracast offers a range of LED fixtures in panel, fresnel, and tube form factors with daylight, tungsten, or bi-color LEDs.
Panel fixtures come in four sizes with model numbers based on the number of LEDs. They offer two models for on camera use, the LED160 and LED160A. Both are 160 LEDs in a compact 6” x 4” x 2” form factor with ¼ / 20 or hotshoe mounting. Since these units are intended for use with smaller hand-held and DSLR cameras, they have the option of using Sony or Panasonic batteries (battery plates are changeable) or running on AC via an optional adapter. The native beam angle is 30 degrees and they can be spread to 60 degrees using a hard-gel type diffuser. If you are wondering about the difference between the two models, the “A” is for aluminum which trades out the familiar plastic body common for these types of fixtures for a more rugged aluminum frame. Other sizes available are the LED500, the LED1000, and LED2000 which are roughly equivalent in output to traditional 300W, 750W, and 1200W fixtures and offer included AC adapters as well as the ability to use V-Lock or Gold Mount batteries. All of the larger sizes have aluminum frames and mounting yokes with baby receivers as well as optional barndoors for beam control. Dimming and color temperature adjustment (for the bi-color models) are via onboard controls with optional DMX control of the LED500, LED1000, and LED2000 at an additional cost.
There are two options for fresnels, the FRESNEL1000 and FRESNEL2000, which are intended to replace traditional 1K and 2K units. Both sizes have a 15-60 degree beam angle, can be shaped with barndoors, and include onboard and DMX controls. The heads are powered from an external 24V source enabling them to be used with larger battery packs or an AC adapter.
Tube fixtures are an update to traditional 2’ and 4’ fluorescent softlights. Instead of a fragile, gas-filled glass tube; LEDs are housed in a plastic tube which protects them and also functions as a diffuser. The LEDT1000 uses three 2’ tubes, the LEDT2000 uses three 4’ tubes, and the LEDT4000 uses six 4’ tubes. Tubes are available in bi-color for quick adjustment to different lighting conditions as well as fixed color daylight and tungsten for higher output. The form factor is virtually identical to existing fluorescent fixtures with flexible, built-in bardoors and a center, lollipop type baby pin mount. Similarly to the panel fixtures, the units can be powered with an AC adapter or with V-Lock or Gold Mount batteries.
Dracacast was also showing the SPITFIRE by Avinair. It’s a state-of-the-art HD Video Transmitter system combining wireless 1080p HD with zero latency. The Spitfire boasts an incredible range of 2000 feet, giving you maximum versatility for your video applications. Equipped with its default antennas, the Spitfire is capable of transmitting up to 2000 feet. Both the Transmitter and Receiver feature 4-Pin Lemo power connectors capable of a wide 7-17V unregulated input voltage. The SPITFIRE SDI system features 3G-SDI and HDMI input on the transmitter and 3G-SDI and HDMI outputs on the receiver. The Avinair SDI System is available at a base MSRP of US $6,999 for one transmitter and receiver pair. Additional receivers can be purchased for MSRP US$3,999 each. Battery plate, antenna, mounting, power cable, and case options are available as accessories.
Brightline showed LED fixtures from both their studio and videoconferencing lines of products. For the studio, they showed the new LED SeriesONE, the new L-CL Chin Light, and the BL.16.
The new LED SeriesOne is a remote phosphor softlight fixture based on the form-factor of Brighline’s classic SeriesONE fluorescent fixtures. The new units can even make use of studio’s existing inventories of fixture accessories such as intensifiers and screens. The LED SeriesONE is dimmable via DMX with no color shift and available in 3200K and 5600K at >95 CRI. Brightline if focusing on controlling color consistency of their remote phosphor by binning the LEDs to a tolerance of not more than 3nm within a manufacturing run. They can be powered from 120, 230, or 277 Volt sources and draw 192W.
The L-CL Chin Light uses the same remote phosphor technology as the LED SeriesOne in a compact, 15” x 3” x 4.75” package (dimensions include mounting hardware). The 18W L-CL is powered via a 6’ low-voltage, coaxial cable which connects the unit to a DMX controlled power supply. Up to four sequentially addressed units can be individually controlled from one power supply making this a great solution for multi-anchor desks.
The BL.16 is a 60W fixture with 16 LEDs in a rectangular 4×4 array. The fixture uses interchangeable optic cartridges in both Daylight and Tungsten, with Broad, Medium, and Narrow beams. The beam can be further shaped using mini control screens as well as three lengths of snoots. The BL.16 is dimmable via DMX, but also offers phase (mains) dimming as an option for direct retrofit into 120-230V studio dimming systems.
For videoconferencing, Brighline showed their LED VideoPlus and LVP-360 fixtures. Designed for mounting in drop-ceiling grids with no extension below the ceiling plane these fixtures provide task lighting and directional lighting for video. Both use remote phosphor technology in 3200K or 5600K at >95 CRI. Fixtures can be fed from switched 120, 230, or 277V sources and dimmed via analog (0-10V) or DMX. Fixture draw is determined by configuration and can be limited to meet energy code requirements. The larger VideoPlus fixtures receive low-voltage power and control from a ceiling or rack mounted power and control box. The smaller LVP-360 can be powered from these as well or from an integral power and data supply.
The LED VideoPlus fixtures have a 5” wide aperture and are available in 2’ and 4’ lengths. To understand the options for these fixtures it is easiest to imagine them installed end-to-end in a row over the centerline of a conference table. The first option is task only lighting. This option provides lighting below the fixture with a 55 degree beam spread to illuminate the top of the table. To this base lighting, Brightline then adds LEDs in the same fixture housing which are aimed at 45 degrees to the side. These have a 25 degree beam spread and are intended to provide front light to the people sitting along the conference table. The video and task lighting beams are designed to overlap slightly to provide even lighting. Depending on the requirements of the room, either one or both sides of the table can be illuminated.
The LVP-360 provides additional flexibility beyond that offered by the LED VideoPlus. The LVP-360 is a 1’ section of LED VideoPlus with the task downlight plus one bank of 45 degree angled video lighting. This 1’ unit is mounted in a circular plate integrated with a 2’ x 2’ ceiling tile. The unit can be aimed by rotating the fixture within the ceiling tile to provide more traditional key, fill, and back lighting angles than are offered by the LED VideoPlus. Brightline sees this being especially useful for single-person shots, such as a CEO’s office. The smaller size could also be used for the ends of the table in a traditional conference room where the main portion of the table is lit with the LED VideoPlus.
SKB was showing new iSeries cases for the popular GoPro family of cameras as well as the new iSeries Tech Box (parts and tool box) and new Roto-molded cases for 32-channel digital mixing consoles.
Cases for your GoPro (or GoPros) can now be had in configurations of 1, 2, 3, or 4 cameras with room for accessories. They are also available as waterproof cases since your GoPro may be in its lovely waterproof case, but wet spare batteries are no good to anyone.
For those of us who have to carry tools and parts for our jobs, the new Tech Box (model 3i-2011-7B-TR) is definitely an “I want”. Imagine if you would, a tacklebox style organizer that didn’t let your stuff move around and become a mess if you (or the baggage handler) flipped it over. This waterproof case measures 20.5” x 11.5” x 7.5” and has four internal, divided trays which sit on top of an open storage area that is just over 3” deep for storing hand tools or other larger items. When the trays and lid are closed, they each fit tightly on top of the layer below to keep things from shifting between compartments. The case has wheels on one end and a pull-out handle for easier transportation once you’ve loaded it up with all of your gear.
Finally, for those whose work involves ears rather than eyes, SKB is now making model specific Roto-molded cases for specific 32-channel digital audio mixing consoles. Cases are currently available for the Allen & Heath QU32 and the Behringer X32 and both include a doghouse to protect the connections on the back of the console. The console “lives” in the base of the case and the wheeled cover latches on to protect the console in transit. The moisture controlled cases are also significantly lighter than comparable, traditional road cases.
ETC brought their A-game to NAB this year with a well designed booth, great people to answer questions and demonstrate products, and new product offerings. New features include new graphics and new rounded power switches with the same classic features: individual light control, HO/Standard switching and the same high quality standards: flicker-free, instant-on, dead quiet operation. Color temperature doesn’t shift when light levels change. The large portable soft lights give the cinematographer or lighting designer a unique soft light that cannot be easily duplicated with traditional luminaires. Lightweight and cool in operation, they can be hand-held, attached directly to a set wall or stand mounted.
