RoscoView is a unique two-part window control system for film and television professionals. It consists of wide width polarizing filter installed on windows and a matching camera polarizing filter. The window filter is available in easy-to-handle acrylic panels or in the traditional soft roll form. The camera filter is optical glass. Rotating the camera filter changes the degree of cross polarization on the window where the RoscoView filter is installed. This results in 100% control of exterior brightness as seen through the window. To the naked eye, the ambient light coming into the room or studio is reduced by only one stop. You can instantly compensate for changes in the daylight exposure as seen through the windows. Reduce studio down-time, no more change out of filter, increase shooting time. Great for areas where it is difficult to re-apply filter regularly.

Tiffen Far Red Control Kit: Featuring the Tiffen T1 and the NEW T ½

With the advancement in HD camera technology, reliably recreating true blacks in moving images has never been more challenging. Digital cameras with enhanced red response allows the DP to capture subtle hues of red never before seen digitally. However, opening up this channel leaves your images vulnerable to Far Red and Near Infrared contamination. The TIFFEN FAR RED CONTROL KIT has the unique ability to absorb this unwanted light while preserving the camera’s increased red response while maintaining crisp blacks and assisting the camera in capturing the wider color gamut it was designed for—minimal light loss—1/2 and 2/3 stop

Newest to the Tiffen family of companies is Listec Teleprompters

The New PromptXpress Series incorporates a built-in Wi-Fi Windows-based computer and features a high quality Enhanced Brightness 15-inch LED display with vandal shield protector and Listec’s unique internal SensaTally. Congured with a trapezoidal fold-down Mirror/Soft Hood to accommodate wide-angle shots, the system boasts a Sliding Balance Plate Assembly for quick setup, Camera Riser with sliding top platform and adjustable height settings to optimize camera positioning. A sliding rear Counterbalance maintains neutral balance on the pan head. Optional battery plates for Anton/Bauer and IDX are available, as is a pan bar mounted multi-functional touch-screen display for editing, intercom, preview and other tasks.

PromptXpress supports the Clear-Com Concert, IntraCom Systems VCom and other software-based intercom systems for multi-user conferencing. On the Concert and VCom systems, a virtual intercom station can be displayed on a separate touch-screen through the prompter’s Wi-Fi capability.

Listec Z-PRO Specially Designed for Mini DV Cameras.

The Z-PRO’s all-in-one design accommodates the lightest weight cameras with a minimum of fuss. Unlike conventional prompters, the Z-PRO mounts over the pan head’s balance point, eliminating the need for a full-sized balance plate and rear counterbalance. By reducing the overall weight of the prompter, the Z-PRO avoids placing undue stress on the support system. Now, a tripod with a capacity of only 25 lbs. can accommodate a mini DV cam and a fully professional 15-inch prompter — saving the need to upgrade to a more robust mounting.

With its compact design and choice of studio and fold-down hoods, the Z-PRO is ideal for in-house prompting, or for those on the move. While standard models feature Listec flat panels, a typical off the-shelf computer LCD* can be substituted, affording the user the option of selecting the display.

Electronic Theater Controls

Although not at the show ETC has a new line of Seledor LED fixtures called Desire.  The new Desire line of LED luminaires–in a familiar PAR-shaped body – offers many layers of choice for these lights. It’s like designing your own light from custom CAD drawings.
Solving your design dilemma begins with proper fixture selection. It starts with the chassis. The Desire D40 luminaire features a circular head of 40 diode emitters for bright looks. It is convection cooled and available in modified outdoor versions.
The brighter D60 version has an expanded head with 60 diode emitters. It is fan-cooled, so all versions stay indoors.

ETC lets you take your longtime lighting needs outdoors with XT™ (exterior) versions of Lustr+, Vivid or Studio luminaires. A sealed lid, watertight glands, waterproof connectors, an adjustable knob for positioning, and an IP65 rating allow the fixture to withstand the sun and snow. The D40 architectural versions have built-in sensor systems to adjust
power to guarantee that the LED emitters will always come on.

Now to color concerns. Like many other LED products, Desire luminaires can use RGB color mixing. But they also take it up a notch, offering another choice: a proprietary x7 Color System™ of seven LED colors and the latest white LED emitters to produce the widest range of colors available. It’s part of ETC’s “more color, better light” philosophy.
But even more color choices come in again when selecting a palette – Lustr®+, Vivid™, Studio™, Fire™ and Ice™ – for a project.

Stand Alone is a more simplified, unmanned operating mode, in which all Desire fixtures can operate. Controllable on the user-interface panel on the back of the fixture, it runs through a sequence of preset looks for total control without, well, control. No DMX console is needed for this fixture to run in Stand Alone or in a Master-Slave operation, in which DMX-cable-linked fixtures run with commands from whichever fixture is designated as the Master.

Also coming from ETC this summer the long anticipated Source 4 Fresnel!

All of these new fixtures can be seen on a mini-site ETC has launched at http://www.layersoflight.com

Clear-Com took advantage of the 2011 NAB Show to introduce the new HME DX210. This newly-designed, two-channel intercom system advances the capabilities of the legendary DX200, offering a blend of wireless intercom performance, system compatibility with wired intercom systems, and ease of use. Operating in the 2.4GHz band, the DX210 delivers exceptional sound clarity and enables interference-free communication for highly demanding productions. The DX210, as with all DX Series systems, features Spectrum-Friendly™ Technology to avoid frequency conflicts and Digital Frequency-Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technology for interference-free communication.

Another debut from ClearCom at this year’s NAB show was the Tempest® 900 – 900MHz digital wireless intercom system. Tempest900 offers the look, feel, features, and functions of the Tempest2400. However, Tempest900 may provide improved coverage in areas where more structural penetration is required and in large enclosed areas where multipath interference would otherwise be a factor. The longer wavelengths and wider symbol width used in the 902 to 928 MHz frequency range allow Tempest900 signals to break through dense walls and other structural objects more readily, increasing the range for users and reducing potential loss of audio. Tempest900 is available in the United States and Canada, while the existing Tempest2400 is distributed worldwide.

These are impressively engineered fixtures.

After 3 years in research and development, Desisti released a new line of LED fresnel lighting fixtures at the 2011 NAB.  It was definitely worth the wait.  These well built and cleverly designed fixtures are a welcome addition to the increasingly crowded LED market.  They show quality in every respect.

Because these fixtures are based on the world renowned “Leonardo” exterior shell, this new LED line capitalizes on a proven workhorse in the television and film industries.  That is the launch point from which the LED Leonardo takes off.  As you can imagine, the internal workings are unique, allowing for truly energy efficient operation while offering a similar spot to flood focusing control to that of its tungsten brethren.  In fact, DeSisti has made available a retrofit kit that can convert existing 1kW and 2kW tungsten Leonardo fresnels into a LED Leonardo fresnels.  Great idea!  That’s nice on the wallet as well as the environment.

The LED Leonardo is available in three models; 40 watts, 90 watts and 120 watts, which are equivalent to 500, 650 and 1,200 watts of tungsten light output, respectively.   Each model has the option of either a 3,200K or 5,600K color temperature light output.  All models have light intensity control via a built-in DMX control card.

Whether you are considering a tungsten to LED conversion for your facility, looking to add to an existing inventory or just starting a lighting package from scratch, the LED Leonardo line of fresnels deserves to receive your very serious consideration.  They are winners.

Dedotec USA, Inc

Leave it to Dedotec and it’s award winning namesake, Dedo Weigert, to design a finely crafted and well engineered LED lighting instrument for video production.  The Felloni series of LED panels are just that.  At first glance they look much like their competitors offerings, yet upon closer review the Felloni has some unique characteristics.

Little talked about, but unquestionably important, is the CRI of 84 that is offered.  This color rendering ability is much improved from the more common CRI of 74 available on most other “white” LEDs.  Although this doesn’t match the CRI of 100 that tungsten-halogen sources possess, it is significantly higher than the competition.   Since image is king, higher color rendering is key to creating truer and more accurate image quality.

There are three models of the Felloni available: Standard, High Output and Low Profile.  Each model has three color temperatures available:  Tungsten, Daylight and Bicolor (continuously adjustable from 3,200 K to 5,600 K).  All models come with an on-board dimmer that is detachable for use as a hand held dimmer or can be upgraded to use DMX control.  Beam angles for each model are available in 50 degree, 30 degree and 15 degree. They are also rainproof.  With a 324 LED array (24 watts) on standard versions and 576 (42 watts) on the high output versions, these 12” x 12” panels provide 31fc and 50fc respectively with the 50 degree bean angle.  All models can accept the Distance Diffuser accessory, which reduces glare noticeably without sacrificing a large amount of output.

Many more details on the Felloni LED series are available on the Dedotec website.  I invite you to visit www.dedolight.com to gain more knowledge on this fine new entry in the LED lighting instrument category.

The pan bar is reversible for right or left handed users and it can quickly be removed and fixed on a tripod leg thanks to the rest clip that’s included.

Also released at NAB were the 509HD systems that are the result of an important technical evolution – the perfect synthesis between an innovative “bridge architecture” and Manfrotto’s cutting edge engineering: Bridging Technology – an exclusive Manfrotto patent. Thanks to the 509HD’s bridge design, the PAN friction control is intuitive and easy to set, but also protected against knocks. Movement around the PAN and TILT axes is smoothed by ball-bearing units which remove all unwanted vibration, no matter what the operating temperature. Friction control combines with a step counterbalance system (covering the full weight range of video equipment) to allow the 509HD to be fine-tuned with extreme precision for the exact in-shot movements you need. The 509HD’s FDS (Fluid Drag System) is variable and directly controls action and resistance on both axes; the ergonomics of the controls have been noticeably improved to make use of the FDS even easier. All of this guarantees ultimate control and excellent video camera support, no matter what the situation, the shooting style, or the equipment setup. The load capacity has also been improved: the 509HD supports kit up to 13kg (28,8lb) at 55mm c.o.g and two 3/8” threads on the top plate allow accessories, such as monitors and arms, to be fitted straight to the head, thus eliminating the need for extra clamps, saving set-up time and freeing the video camera’s hot shoe for other components.

A prototype of the yet to be released Joker Bug 1600 was in K5600’s booth and the release date is to be before the end of this year.  Looking like a machined aluminum Joker Bug 800 on steroids, it will have all the utility and accessories of the smaller versions, but with a lot more punch. There will be both fresnel and Joker versions.

Kino Flo

Available this fall from Kino-Flo are the new Imara S6 and S10 DMX controlled fluorescent studio fixtures.  Using the popular 55w compact lamps, the S10 has the same output of the VistaBeam 600 while drawing a little more than half the amperage.  Their new hi-beam reflector design concentrates the light evenly on both the horizontal and vertical axes.  They are available in either yoke-mount or pole-op mount, and can be controlled through manual or DMX lamp switching, and manual or DMX dimming.

Also shown was the new Tegra 4Bank which redefines the evolution of light by combining the Academy-award winning features of the 4ft 4Bank portable system with on-board control features of the Diva-Lite 401. The fixture produces as much light as a 1,000W tungsten softlight, using only one tenth the amount of power. The built-in barn doors and center mount system make the lightweight Tegra ideal for hand held shots, rigging in tight locations or mounting on a light stand.

American Grip

In cooperation with Kino-Flo, American Grip introduced the Image 80/85 Vertical Hanger.  This nifty piece of hardware allows the large fixture to be hung from a pipe or grid in either a vertical or horizontal fashion, keeping the weight of the fixture perfectly balanced, and eliminating twisting loads on the yoke and the mounting pipe itself.  Perfect for a large chroma-key set shooting subjects head to toe where fixtures need to be oriented vertically.

Mole Richardson

Mole Richardson has developed what they have defined as the first film friendly LED. The MoleLED 12 pack weighs 12 pounds and has been designed in collaboration with Osram, utilizing their KREIOS stage light modules using high-output blue LED’s with phosphor domes to create an excellent spectral distribution suitable for film work.  Available in both Tungsten and Daylight color temperatures, the The MoleLED 12 pack comes with a yoke with 5/8” receiver and a 15’ detachable cable with Neutrik connector.  This fixture can even operate on a 12 volt car battery and is available in a kit with a gel frame, shield, power supply and case.

Coming soon, Mole has developed a MoleLED SINGLE fixture available for installation in or on podiums, lecterns or anchor desks.  The SINGLE will be available in kits and powered through its 3-channel controller.  Each fixture weighs less than a pound and each kit contains (3) fixtures- either daylite or tungsten, a controller, power supply, extension cables and case.

Mole Richardson’s Daylite and Tungsten PAR fixtures are sturdy and come in a variety of wattages ranging from 575W, 800W, 1,200W, 2500W, 6,000W and 18,000W.  These fixtures are compatible with standard accessories (based on size) and are ruggedly constructed.

The new 24,000W Daylite Fresnel offers rugged construction and an innovative cooling mechanism that maximizes simplicity.  The light beam is smooth, versatile (can move from spot to flood) and the large output makes this fixture perfect for a large studio or location.  Mole says that it has worked to coax longer life from a standard lamp- designing a large floating socket that reduces vibration and allows the lamp to cool more effectively through ventilation.  Standard Mole accessories are available for these fixtures.

ARRI L-7 LED Fresnels:

One of the highlights of the NAB show this year was the Arri L-Series LED Fresnels.  Available in Tungsten (L7-T 3200K), Daylight (L7-D, 5600K) and L7-C (color tuneable 2700-10000K Green – Magenta Adjustment, Full Gamut Color Mixing) all at a CRI of >90 . These fixtures have a standard 7” Fresnel lens on all models and include a 15 – 50°, continuously focusable beam angle as well as other expected functionality of a conventional Fresnel. Additionally, the L-7’s provide even lighting with good barndoor framing ability, features that have been proven lacking in many previous LED fixtures.   The low energy consumption makes them an excellent fit for both studio and location lighting applications. The L7’s draw only 22% of a traditional Fresnel unit’s power: 220W versus the traditional 1000W.  These fixtures are also rated for IP54 weather resistance and offer easy maintenance and cleaning.  Smooth (0-100%) dimming is accomplished by way of integrated 16 bit (2 channel ) DMX. On board control and upgradeable soft and firmware are great options for a customer looking to make a onetime investment.  To satisfy the rigorous sound requirements of modern broadcast studios, the L-Series passive cooling system incorporates no moving parts or fans and is therefore completely silent; it can be used in ambient air temperatures of up to 95° F. An alternative is to select the active cooling system option which uses an extremely quiet (<20 dB) fan and provides a compact and lightweight option for location work in temperatures of up to 122°F The L-7 fixtures list for under $3,000.00 and are available with standard barn door and color filter accessories, as well as 5-pin DMX control.
